The other day, I went over to the Stacy household to visit my favorite adult-who-is-not-related-to-me, Stacy’s Mom (and Stacy)!
I arrived with a tupperware of dessert to an odd scene: Stacy was baking a cake (we always have to eat dessert when we’re together) and Stacy’s Mom was creating a blog! First of all, Stacy only bakes cakes from boxes. And Stacy’s Mom doesn’t blog (well she does now). It was a good thing I arrived when I did, because Stacy was having trouble with her cake mix and Stacy’s Mom was having trouble with her blog.
I should’ve known the cake wouldn’t come out right when Stacy didn’t believe olive oil could be substituted for vegetable oil in a cake mix. But she used it anyway, because that’s all they had. Its a wonderful substitution; it only makes the cake healthier! And then I left Stacy to the cake to help Stacy’s Mom create a blog.
Next thing I knew, Stacy was pulling the griddle out of the oven (which should have been a sign of the cake’s disasterous fate), and putting the cake in. And then we smelled it. 9 minutes into the oven, and the kitchen smelled like a charred box of cake mix. We opened the oven and discovered a volcano had formed. The cakes were sprouting lava, molten cake style.

So we pulled them out of the oven and attempted to salvage the remains by cutting off the tops and scraping off the charred bits. Stacy then proceeded to dump the cake into the sink when she was dumping out the burned bits. But she managed to fish the cake out in one edible piece. And then I broke my cake flipping it out of the pan.

But that’s nothing that can’t be fixed with some frosting! We then proceeded to eat all the volcano tops with scoops of frosting.

Surprisingly, the cake turned out delicious. Much better than cake mix cake, actually! The artificial taste was barely there, and the frosting out of the can tasted like sugar heaven, and not artificial red 5. It was divine. I hope Stacy makes more disaster cakes in the future.
I wonder what went wrong in our baking process? Stacy’s Mom suspects the oven was set to broil, and not bake. She’s probably right. She’s usually right.
And check out Stacy’s Mom’s wonderful new blog! Its all about parenting and how to raise wonderful children, like Stacy, and how to deal with said child’s fabulous friends (like me)! Stacy’s Mom is a fantastic writer and she gives out the best advice. And she likes dessert.
I am amazed at how pretty you were able to make it look!
thanks!!
its all betty crocker though – if she didn’t make such pretty frosting it wouldn’t look so good.
It looks a yummy cake!!
Hehe what a funny story! I’ve never thought of using olive oil, will consider trying it soon, though. Also, that cake LOOKs delicious – all gooey and moist like every cake should be! Sometimes things we perceive as kitchen disasters actually aren’t
…I’ve discovered this many times in my own kitchen
. I also like how you decorated the cake
