One of the things that the readers of this blog do not know about me is that I am a Huge Hello Kitty Fanatic. I can’t believe I have managed to blog for this long and not mention my Hello Kitty obsession! Hello Kitty is not just an adorable character to me, she is a friend and source of inspiration (do I sound crazy? I hope not). I wrote my college admissions essay on Hello Kitty (she got me into UCLA and every other school I applied to), wrote two term papers in college about Hello Kitty, flew across the country to get my hands on a Hello Kitty Tokidoki, obsessively play Hello Kitty Online (if you’re into gaming, I recommend Hello Kitty Roller Rescue; its superfun), collect everything Hello Kitty; I will buy and overpay for ANYthing with Hello Kitty on it, my bedroom looks like a 4-year-old lives in it… yea, you get the idea. I love Hello Kitty!

And so, ever since it opened its doors January 2008, it has been one of my life goals to go to Hello Kitty Sweets, the official Hello Kitty themed restaurant and bakery in Taipei, Taiwan. I believe this is the only official Hello Kitty themed restaurant in the world! A fantasyland of Hello Kitty AND dessert?! My idea of heaven! And lucky me, I was able to go and now I get to share the fantasy with you!

fantasy decor
Hello Kitty Sweets is AmazinG, even for non-Hello Kitty aficionados. The décor is pure fantasy, and the food has all been “Hello Kitty-ized”, and everything is so adorable you’re afraid to eat it and destroy the fantasy. The entire building is pink, and done up with ribbon trimmings and sparkling chandeliers. The walls are quilted (think faux-Chanel), and even the staff are part of the fantasy, with cute pink aprons and kitty ears. Everything is fit for a princess!

Hello Kitty Puff Pastry
The food is extremely fusion, but very tasty. Everything on the menu is a set meal, aside from the cakes and pastries available in the bakery. We had a baked rice dish with cheese (Taiwanese attempt at risotto), and rice and seafood puff pastry in the shape of Hello Kitty’s head. Each entrée comes with a side of potato salad, an appetizer of sweet corn chowder, and a drink of your choice (we had the mint frappacino and the kiwi smoothie). Every entrée is gorgeously plated with a pretty salad and hello kitty designs made by condiments and spices. Each meal also finishes with a tiny piece of cake and fruit. The dessert was probably my least favorite, as it was light fluffy asian cake that looked like chocolate, but tasted more like vanilla. But the entrees and sides were all delicious!

Hello Kitty "risotto"

The Menu is another source of fun at Hello Kitty Sweets. It comes in the form of a giant book, with full page color photos of Kitty in various outfits and settings, as well as pictures of every entrée and pretty desserts. Everything has detailed complete description so you can make an informed choice. One of my favorite parts of Hello Kitty Sweets is the window where you can watch the bakers making Hello Kitty desserts. All of the desserts are either Hello Kitty shaped, or have impressions of Hello Kitty somewhere, and are just completely Hello Kitty-ed out!

Momoberry-esque Dessert Kitty
Hello Kitty Sweets also has its own line of specific Hello Kitty Sweets merchandise. The Hello Kitty Sweets Kitty has eyelashes (somewhat like the Momoberry Kitty), wears stripes, and is always seen holding a cappuccino or slice of cake. Supercute!

If you plan on going to Hello Kitty Sweets, make sure you plan ahead! It is always crowded and there are always multiple groups celebrating their birthdays/baby showers/etc there. The place is usually packed, so make reservations if you can! Also, I was amazed by the amount of men at a Hello Kitty restaurant! There were a lot of couples, husbands and wives, but also bigger parties with quite a few teenage boys. I even saw one party of 10 where 9 women were celebrating the only male at the table’s birthday (I felt kind of embarrassed for him; they brought out a giant Hello Kitty cake with candles and everyone sang to him).

Hello Kitty seating
But everyone is happy at Hello Kitty Sweets! How can you not be, when surrounded by so much happiness, yumminess, sparkliness, prettiness, and sugar?!

Hi Dorothy,
I really liked reading your Hello Kitty blog. You definitely have a way with storytelling. Your words are really poetic and your words definitely paint a mesmerizing picture. I better check it out when I go to Taiwan in August
Any particular dish you think I should get?
Also, while reading your blog, I felt like you were writing the script for a Food Network show. Maybe you should send in your samples, so you can be hired to write for them
What do you think? I mean, you gotta start somewhere. Just pointing you in a possible direction.
hi! I’m glad you got to visit! The cakes definitely look so cute, I just heard the food wasn’t that great so I haven’t gone. But it’s good to know that you liked the food too. If you are a Hello Kitty lover, you have to get the Hello Kitty sandwich maker (if you can find it)- it makes the best cheese sandwiches and cute sandwiches too!

I want to live there and eat there daily.
My daughter would lovelovelove this! I’m going to show her your post the minute she comes home from school today.
What a fun restaurant to visit, especially if you are a Hello Kitty fan.
WOW it looks like you had lots of fun at Hello Kitty
Many thanks for calling by my blog and for your kind comment! I hope you will call by again soon.
That is so cute! I didn’t even know there was a Hello Kitty restaurant somewhere in this world! I don’t think you are crazy for liking Hello Kitty!!
I’ll have to show my daughter this post, she’ll go crazy! I love how on the plates they “dusted” the hello kitty picture on the plate with spices, how cute is that?
Thanks for sharing such a fun place to go!
Wow, this place looks like so much fun! I used to love going to the Hello Kitty store in the mall when I was younger.
Yay, i’m so glad so many people love hello kitty!
Mike – when you go you should try the chocolate gold hello kitty cake; i really wanted to try it when i was there but its big and there were only two of us
Joan – the food is really good, so you should definitely go!
Jenn – while i was there, i kept thinking how hard it must have been to dust the outline of Kitty on the plate and who had such a tedious job!
if anyone is thinking about going and needs help finding the place, feel free to drop me a email! its in an alley off the main street so its not very noticeable
Dorothy! Great writing. Haha, you SHOULD do a dessert show/Food network show. I’d watch it!!! Thanks for featuring me
!
I LOVE IT!! When I thought it couldn’t get any better, you just topped it off for me.
Almost daily i search online for the different things that Hello Kitty do, and you just ….. topped it! Who would have thought combining sensual desserts with the best cat in the world would make my heart flutter!
xx
Thanks for sharing!
It looks so cute! You need to start saving money so we can accomplish another life goal – PUROLAND!

This is wayyyyyyyyyyyy too cute! Gawd, my nieces would go crazy at this restaurant.
That is so adorable that Hello Kitty has been the inspiration to get you over some of life’s major hurdles. That little kitty sure has some big girl power.
Wow, this is crazy! I didn’t even realize this place existed. This was a huge deal for you! I’m so glad you got to go, and the food looks delicious. I had no idea you liked Hello Kitty so much. She isss awfully cute.
There is something incredibly sweet about Hello Kitty. Funny about your room looking like a 4 year old’s! Very cool that your Hello Kitty essay got you into the college of your choice!
what a cool place! the kiwi smoothie in particular has caught my eye. that’s a lot of cuteness in one location–i’m glad you got to go!
Aww, too cute! I don’t know if I could bring myself to eat Hello Kitty’s face though!
Hi Dorothy!!
I am so jealous! Looks so yummy! I posted a link to your blog on my blog (Hello Kitty Minutiae).
Hello Kitty!! I never knew they made desserts!
What an absolutely fun place and a great obsession–besides desserts. I loved Hello Kitty as a young girl, but since I have all boys, they aren’t so much in to it as I was hoping I’d have a girl to pass the tradition on to!
What a cool experience! I’m so glad you got to do this. I have to admit that I was quite surprised to hear that the food was so good. It certainly looks amazingly delicious. And, oh, those desserts!!
omg those hello kitty sweets are amazingly cute

What an interesting post! Great that you got to visit such a significant place for you — and the food looks divine!
I’ve never heard of that place. Now I want to go. That looks so good.
Aww that place is too cute! Everything looks so FUN!
Blonde Duck – I agree with you; this would be the ultimate place to live and eat in!
Bitter Sweet – it is very hard to bring yourself to stick a fork into Hello Kitty’s face, but the deliciousness is worth it!
Food Librarian – how cool that you’re a Bruin too! yay Bruins! And yes, this place IS better than disneyland! (i’m a huge disneyland fan too!)
and digidew – SO glad i could make your day, haha
Hi, Dorothy!!!!! Today is my birthday and i’m turning 11. My dad was going to get me a cake from there, but we’re not in Taipei right now. The sad part is that he told me he would get it a year ago!!!!! My mom, my god-mother, and I all have the same birthday!!!! NO kidding!!!! It’s so cool because my mom is coming to Tao-yuan today from California. I live there and we are having our summer vacation in Taiwan. My family and I come back every year for 2 months. Every year is the same, we live in Tao-yaun for 1 month, Taipei for 1 month. I love love love love love Hello Kitty too!!!!!!!!! I just wish I can be sitting in that restaurant right now.
Dear Dorothy,
Thanks for sharing the nice pics you took at the HK cafe with us!
Really like to know more about other HK fanatics like you.
Regards,
Jasmine
