It all started with Barley.

S had a big barely used bag of barley on her countertop, and I started wondering what barley tasted like.  S claimed barley was just like brown rice.  I love brown rice, so I decided I had to try barley!  …but it was 1am in the morning, and who has stomach for barley at that hour?  Besides, it takes half an hour to slow boil. So S said that she would make it for me for breakfast, but that meant she would have to get up at 7am to make it since she had a breakfast date.  And that led to dreaming about crepes and S’s amazing crepe recipe.. so we decided to throw a spontaneous breakfast party!  We quickly made a list of everything we needed, spent 10 minutes very carefully manuvering out of a tiny parking space squashed in between a brand new Porsche and an unforgiving cement wall, rushed into the market, picked out chips and then put them back and then picked them up again, debated crepe combinations in the frozen aisle, made friends with the janitor so he would give us free aluminum foil, waited impatiently in line to checkout behind two dozen drunk students, cried over Brad and Angelina’s supposed breakup on National Enquirer, forgot to validate for parking, but then remembered that we had remembered to validate, had trouble getting out of the parking structure, then had even more trouble parking back in the tiny parking spot next to the Porsche and scratch-inducing wall, forgot the code to get into the elevator, finally made it upstairs, got the groceries in the fridge, and set our alarms for an 8 AM wakeup call to start cooking!

The cooking of everything was another haphazard process in its own.  We only had 1 pot, 2 bowls, 2 spoons, and 1 knife between the two of us and 4 main dishes, and 30 minutes to do everything (we overslept… a lot).

Iveta's Apricot Scones

Iveta's Apricot Scones

Our Haphazard Breakfast Party was a delicious hit, even though the menu was very random and made up of everything we were craving the night before.  We had Iveta’s scones, gucamole and jalapeno chips, barley, yogurt, and S’s amazing crepes.

The scones came from an Iveta Gourmet baking mix.  They came out great!  Really moist and super easy to make.  All I had to do was add some cream and mix everything together; perfect for a haphazard breakfast!  Iveta has lots of gourmet baking mixes, from scones to muffins and even cupcakes!  They also have a lot of all-natural baking mixes.  Iveta even has homemade curds and jams to go with your scones!  I was able to make the scones and the guacamole and get ready somewhat all within the 20 minutes I had before speeding off to pick up our guest of honor.

S’s Amazing(ly Easy) Crepes

2 eggs

1 c flour

1 c milk

1/8 c melted butter (1/4 stick of butter)

pinch of salt

Whisk eggs and salt together.  Whisk flour and milk in bit by bit, alternating.  Whisk in butter once all the flour and milk has been added.  Whisk until batter is smooth.

To cook the crepes, pour about 1/4 of the batter into your skillet (we used a big one).  Swirl around to thinly coat bottom of skillet and heat over medium heat.  Once crepe has set, flip over and cook the other side.  Once they are completely cooked, fill and enjoy!  We filled ours with plenty of Nutella, sliced bananas, and raspberries.

My trip to New York City was amazing and beyond fun, especially the dessert part!  We visited about four dessert places a day and spent most of the week in a sugar coma.  It was perfect!

Dessert Stop #1:  Good Enough to Eat

Peter Paul Pancakes

Peter Paul Pancakes

the dessert: their famous Peter Paul pancakes made of Belgian chocolate and toasted coconut

our assessment: Overly hyped up – the Belgian chocolate was delicious, but when isn’t Belgian chocolate delicious?  These pancakes were pretty generic, and we decided we prefer pancakes from chain restaurants (Mimi’s Cafe) and local Southern California restaurants (Eggs ‘n Things) better.  But the restaurant was darling, with a white picket fence in front of the entrance and a restaurant layout that reminded me of the dwarfs’ kitchen when Snow White lived there.

Dessert Stop #2: Cafe Lalo

over 100+ desserts

over 100+ desserts

the desserts: Bailey’s Irish Cream and Almond Torte

our assessment: …NOT what we were expecting.  The cafe was completely adorable, all decked out French-like, with supercute glasses, cute outfits for the servers, over 100 varieties of desserts, cute napkins… everything was adorable!  But taste-wise?  Probably the worst desserts of our Dessert Tour.  Both cakes were very dry, and tasted like they had been sitting there for a day… or more.

Dessert Stop #3: Levain Bakery

the dessert: those infamous cookies!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip

Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip

our assessment: I LOVED THEM!  The chocolate chip walnut cookie is, by far, the best cookie there.  We had the chocolate peanut butter chip and the chocolate chip walnut cookie.  Both cookies were moist, crunchy on the outside, but soft, melty, on the inside – SO delicious!  This was the only dessert location I visited twice during my tour.  Helen wasn’t as infatuated with these cookies and I was, since she prefers LA’s Diddy Riese cookies (3 for $1) for their value and variety.  They also have a Levain Cam, which takes pictures (at 10 second intervals) of the store – so fun!  Helen and I had a ball posing for pictures on the Levain Cam.

Dessert Stop #4: Nizza

the dessert: birthday flourless chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream

our assessment: SOOOO GOOD!  the flourless chocolate cake was perfect!  The vanilla ice cream was generic, but anything could have gone perfectly with this perfect cake.  I don’t know if this dessert is actually on the menu, but I got it for my birthday.

Hoddeok, and I’m in love with Korea June 3, 2008

I wish I was Korean.  For those of you who are unfortunate enough to know only the virtual me, I heart everything Korean, even though I’m not Korean.  I LOVE Korean food, Korean dramas, Korean music, Korean cartoons, Korean plastic surgery, Korean boys…

and of course, Korean desserts.  Koreans are not big on sweet food, but the sugary goodies they do have more than make up for the lack of sugar in their culture.  For example, Hoddeok.  Hoddeok is a type of Korean pancake. Most Korean pancakes are of the salty variety, stuffed with anything from kimchee to scallions or even oysters.  But not Hoddeok!  Hoddeok is stuffed full of delicious brown sugar, nuts, and cinnamon and then pan-fried to perfection. Such a simple combination that brings such pure delight.

I wish I had better pictures to show for them, but I was too busy eating to snap pictures.

You can find a nice recipe and tutorial on Hoddeok here and make your own.

OK, I’m done procrastinating and now I must go back to the worst week of my life, which involves 2 papers, 1 presentation, 1 lab, and one midterm all by Wednesday.  I need some Hoddeok.
